I have a 1991 E350 with a Sportsmobile camper conversion in it. I need to replace the shocks but I am unsure what to get and wanted to see what opinions are out there. A few people have told me Ranchos or Bilsteins, but then from someone I trust I am being told that those are just names and arent worth the price premium. They are suggesting I just go with a Monroe or Gabriel heavy duty shock. What do you guys think? Are the Bilstein 5100s that much better that I should pay $99 each for them or would the Monroe Ultras do the trick at $48 each?
Stay away from Monroe. Either KYB or Bilstein are you best choices.I have used both Monroe and Gabriel, both wear out rapidly, and are poorly made. There is a reason the factory shocks on most Fords are made by KYB.
I put Ranchos on my BII and loved them. I got a great deal on them new in the box on e-Bay. I forget what I paid for them but it was less than the local discount auto store wanted for the Monroes. I'll be looking for some shocks for my E-350 soon also so I'm interested to hear what you decide.
How quickly is "rapidly worn out?" Months, or a few years? I have looked at the Ranchos but I can get the Monroe Gas Magnums at a very steep discount making it almost 2 for the price of 1. If it will last me a few years I would rather go the cheaper route.
bburito, a friend, who is an expert body man and mechanic highly recommends the Bilsteins. I am also in need of shocks for my E350 and that's when he recommended the Bisteins. He said to go to Camping World to get them. I don't know why he recommends CW, maybe they're cheaper there. But I've never known CW for having cheap prices.

Bilsteins are probably among the best. They are made by KYB's European division, and are slightly better in ride and consistency than KYB shocks. KYBs are a close second.
