Has anyone out there used PPG ALK-200 paint? Is it as easy to use and look as good as they say it does? I am going to attempt my first paint job and wanted something that goes on easy and i dont want to fool with clearcoat.
I haven't tried it, but people pee all over their legs about PPG. All of their products will be very well manufactured, and will out-perform your abilities and equipment if this your first time.
One thing I don't like about single stage paint is when it comes time to do repairs or touch ups.
With single stage, you have to repaint the entire panel. There is no way to feather the edge into the old paint.
I shot my truck with single stage because of cost mostly (plus I sprayed it out in my driveway), but wish I hadn't. When it gets redone this year I will go with basecoat - clearcoat.
I used R-M single stage Whimbleton White with hardener and it came out pretty nice for a back yard paint job. I did have to wet sand and buff it though. I wasn't trying to build a show truck either. I actually use my truck as a truck but try to keep it pretty clean never the less.
I have used other PPG products in the past and they have always been top notch supplies.
Word of warning: Get yourself a GOOD respirator when you spray no matter what you use. Your brain cells will thank you later in life!
Hey thanks uncle.stosh. I went to the paint store today and priced the ALK-200. $55 for a gallon of metallic "saphire blue" (the only color i can think of thats close) and hardener. I'm really on a budget on this build since work has been slow. I'm going to mainly be driving it on the weekends and maybe once or twice a week to work. Definately not taking it to Wally World where the shopping cart happy idiots are.
I have a good gun that we've sprayed metallics with before with pretty decent results. I have always helped my dad with the painting, so I'm gonna give it a try this time. I have an old hood to practice on.
