So I found a guy that has a '74 f100 with disc brakes that has been hit pretty hard on the left front. He is going to use the motor for another vehicle and is willing to let the disc brake setup go pretty cheap($100). He says the I-beam is bent on the side where it was hit. My truck is a '66 f-100 and the I-beams are straight. I can keep my I-beams and use the '74 spindles on my I-beams right? Do I need to use steering linkage from a '74 to make the '74 spindles work properly on my truck? Is there a chance the spindle may be bent too? If so, how could I tell?
Yes, you can use them, but I'd have a close close look at that side. The spindle could be bent, but the pin could also be bent. I've seen them where they try and "shear"....and you can never get the pin out at all. Look closely at the relationship of the boss on the spindle to the beam. Compare the sides and make sure it's square to the beam. If you can, turn it, and see if the spindle moves in a smooth arc, or if it moves in a sort of "egg" arc. The 66 steering stuff will work, but the steering stop is a little diff from the drum spindle to the disc spindle. You'll also need to grab the master and prop valve....including the m/c rod. It's been awhile since I've done mine, but I don't remember anything too wierd. It's WELL worth doing...
You may want to pull the ( Wide Brake Pedal ) Because you may want the wide one
later down the road! Theres a wide pedal for manual and different one for power brakes.
I think it would be better to grab the pedal from the truck the parts are coming off of.
Here is a link to a post where I wrote up how I Retro fit the Wide Power Brake Pedal worked real good I took a look my self because its been so long since I installed it!
If you end up keeping your narrow pedal, maybe this can help some one else, and Bumps this INFO up!
Mark, I have done these a few times after paying 6-7 hundred for the truck, harvesting all needed parts and selling not needed parts for more than I paid for the truck.
I would recommend that you pass on that one like RocketMonkey28 suggested. There are too many donors out there to have to start with badly mangled parts. IMHO
