Wheel Selection/Backspacing Help

I am trying to finish up my 1955 F100 and am to the wheel/tire stage. I want to make sure that I get the correct wheels to fit my application and would like to run my selection by you guys. Here goes…

I have a Heidt’s Mustang II IFS (power steering) installed up front with 5x4.5 bolt pattern. In the rear, I installed a 1967 Ford 9” truck rear end (61 ¼”) with stock fenders (11” of clearance). I am looking to purchase 15”x7 (front) and 15x8.5” (rear) American Racing wheels, both having 3 ¾ backspacing. My tire dimensions are 215/65/15 up front and 225/70/15 in the rear. Do you think I will have enough space? Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.<O

Thumbs up tire & wheel deal...

I'm tryin' to figure out mine too on my '56......with real wires...

...lookig at 15 x 8's all around & hopin' for maybe 235/70/15 with 3 1/2
to 3 3/4 back-space...

Gonna run TCI MII IFS up front & No-Limit 4-Link out back on a '70 9"
ALL on air-ride...

Kinda frustratin' ain't it......

Sounds like you'll have plenty f room though......

Lance, go to Early Wheel and they have a diagram on how to figure the back space you need or you can call and talk to jason the owner, he's a good guy.

I have a Heidts Mustang II IFS on my 56 I am using 15x7 Cragar rims on the front and had the same question you have. I sent Heidts a Email just yesterday asking them what they recommend for backspacing for this setup and they recommended 3 3/4" Backspace. This is for the front

with 225's on back you should be fine....one thing you could do is go to your local tire shop and grab a throw away or (scrap) tire most places give them away ( i know at your shop we do) but then you can get an idea of how that tire will fit in there....i know they make a tool you can bolt to your hub and then slide a tire over it and you can adjust it to find your backspacing....AutoWare Technologies, LLC, Makers of SoftWheels ....is the site of that tool....good luck

Guys,

Thank you for the help. I checked out Early Wheel Company as suggested by Homade discovering a nice chart that helped me with my measurements. If I followed the site information correctly, I believe a 15x8.5 wheel with 3 ¾“ backspacing will be a little too tight. With the stock fenders (11”) and a 1967 Ford F100 9” rear end, I have roughly 5 ¾” backspacing leaving 2” from the rim to the bed panel. On the other side, I would have 4 ¾“ leaving ½“ (2 + 3 ¾ + 4 ¾ = 10 ½ ) from the rim to the fender. With the advised 1” clearance for tire bulge an 15 x 8.5 wheel wouldn’t fit. I am not a mathematician, but I think my numbers add up. On the front, I will go with the 15x7 wheel as Heidt’s suggested (thanks 3golfjack).

<OAgain, thanks for all the help as I would not know what to do without it.

Respectfully,
<O
