I'm looking into drop kits for my truck and looking for some first hand experience with good/bad kits you may have used. I want a moderate drop, 2-3" front/ 4-5" rear. I already have 20" rims on it, but the suspension is all stock. I've narrowed it down to a drop kit from Truck Accessories | Pickup Truck Accessories & Truck Performance Parts | Stylin' Trucks. Its a 3"/4" drop kit with components from Belltech (lowering springs) and DJM (drop shackels/hangers/alignment shims). Shocks are separate, and I'm thinking to going with Belltech shocks. The drop kit is $310 and shocks are about $40/each. Any thoughts? I'm hoping to keep as close a possible to stock ride, possibly a little stiffer but not too much. Of course, I don't what any alignment problems either, I'll change ball joints, tie rods, ect, as needed.
I bought my drop components separate but I've got 3 in Belltech springs up frt and the DJM kit in the back. They are both good, solid parts. They've been on my truck for 4-5 years and I haven't had any problems with them. Go ahead and get a camber kit to put in while you're working on the frt. If the shocks you're looking at are the Belltech Nitro, please be aware that they only last about 25-30k miles. That's what I bought and they need replaced.
Changing the coil springs and shackles are EASY. The problem is going to be the hangers. I used an air chisel to cut the head off and couldn't get the rivets out. I beat on them, heated them up, beat on them with a bigger hammer, took it to the closest shop and they got them out with a sledgehammer. I got aggravated and didn't even think about drilling them.
About a week after I dropped it, I noticed the back drivers side was sitting lower than the right side. I got under it and the overload spring was gone. I pulled the one out of the right side and it makes for a much softer ride. Gives it about another 3/4 in drop too. Problem with that is the back end is going to sink. I recently put the factory shackles back on because the back had sank too low.
the drop hangers replace the front or rear stock hangers? Do you have to get the gas tank out of the way? I'll probably take the parts to a shop to get it installed, I already got a project in my garage and my jack stands/jacks and room to work are occupied for a while. Whats in the camber kit? Shims for proper alignment? Do you need the camber kit for 2" lowing springs? I may get the drop spindles/springs if thats the case.
