lights behind the grille

I got some hella fog lights that I want to mount behind my grille and I was wondering if anyone had some pictures of how they mounted theirs on. Im thinking of mounting them onto the plastic, or whatever it is, piece in front of the radiator, has anyone does this, and how does it work? Your help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

I have mine behind the grille...see this link:

They are mounted on the plastic, with a strip of metal I put underneath for re-inforcement. Just about the entire grille came out to do it! I rerally do like the way it looks!

I also put Hella's behind my grill. Nothing complicated at all really. I took out my front grill to do it made everything really easy. Under the hood take off the plastic piece that has the belt diagram on it. Then unscrew all the little screws that go into the that 'mask' part of the front. Remember to get the ones that are behind your turn signals lenses, and to pull the plastic push pins out of the bottom of the 'mask' part. There is a few below each headlight. That plastic part is basically a 'U' shape, which isn't strong at all, so you'll need to put something in the 'U' for strength. I just packed mine with washers. Easy breezy. Just make sure you measure twice to get the lights evenly spaced or else it will look stupid. Mine a crazy amount of light. I have the Optilux 1900 driving lamps what are you using?

I got a set of Hella 500 off-road lights that are 55W. They are just over a 6" diameter which from what I've seen should work just fine. How long did it take you guy's to get them installed?

Not really sure, I was messing around with alot of stuff at the same time. It take what it takes... One more thing make sure you find the right wire to hook your relay into. I hooked mine to my running lights which was kind of lame... I should have hooked it into to high beam. I would switch it around if I wasn't selling my truck soon.

Hey thanks man. I just figured it would be easier to mount them onto that plastic instead of trying to make a bracket with a lack of tools. Did you just reinforce it with washers on the bolt thats attached to the light?

No, I wanted to keep the lenses of the lights more or less flush with the grille.
I had a handmade "maltese cross" mounted between the lights, but I am planning to mount another artsy craftsy thing there instead.
This truck was going to be "rat rodded", but plans have changed.

SO, the grille headed for the rubbish pile.

You can mount lights further back and install a billet type of grille.

I can try to get you a pic of how I did it tomorrow. I did it a little different. Just to give you a little choice.

xtr those look really nice. Did you have to mount them upside down though with the way you have the bracket or are they right side up?

I presume you're not interested in functional "fog lights"? This has come up before. To perform well as "fog lights" they should be mounted as low as is practical. A Bosch website recommends "fog lights" be installed 10"-14" off the road.

My stock '98 4X4 is ~36" to midline of grille, the bumper chrome to plastic skirt line is ~18", the bottom of the plastic skirt is ~13".

By using "fog lights" placed at ~36" height you could actually reduce your visibility in fog.

I would not mount lights to the plastic. They may bounce so badly the filaments could fail prematurely.

I would not mount big traditional lights in front of radiator b/c they'd interfere w/air flow & gobble power. The openings behind my grille are ~6"X13" which makes the pics of behind the grille lights look like they block 30%-40% of the flow. Instead of laminar flow thru 2-6"X13" apertures, you'd get turbulent, reduced pressure, flow thru restricted ducts.

I'd look into the new, high tech, compact lights and/or mounting aux lites in the bumper's 'mouth'.
