I am trying to replace the high mount brake light bulb and am having difficulty. I removed the 2 screws and just cannot get at the bulb. The assembly is loose after removing the screws but it just won't come out. I looked through the slight opening when I pry outwards on it and I do not see anything that could be holding it. Any help would be appreciated.
I finally got the darn thing out. I come to find out that the bulb got so hot before burning out that it caused the plastic on the bottom to bubble out thus preventing the assy. from pulling right out. I had to use a knife and wedge it underneath to break away the melted plastic. To give an idea how hot the bulb got, the glass literally blistered out around the bulb. Luckily nothing caught fire.
That kind of failure in a light bulb is not uncommon in tight spaces. What actually happened was the seal on the lamp failed very slowly allowing oxygen into the glass envelope of the bulb... feed any "burning" material oxygen very slowly increases the heat level exponentially. This caused the tungsten in the filament to break down and scatter to the walls of the bulb. As the hot tungsten hit the glass it softened the glass and caused the blistering. There is no way to know if an incandescent lamp will fail this way or not but it IS more common when the lamp is enclosed in a confined space. Best suggestion, if you want to eliminate the possibility of a repeat failure of this type is to find an LED retrofit bulb for this application. LED retrofits will last much longer and NEVER get as hot. Just compare the actual light output with the incandescent version or you may be disappointed with the light output performance.
