Well, as I knew before the rear end is bad and has been causing my u joint probs. It has a bunch of play in the pinion. I can get the rear end built for $1000. Or, I found a "good" dana 60 front straight axle and good rear axle from a 350 for 800. They were on the road a year before truck was wrecked. He said I could even have the whole frame with 350 leafs for that money. How hard would the conversion be?
Do it! that is a steal. Generally the 60 goes for 1000 itself. Is the steering linkage, track bar and front drive shaft with it? You will need those items but I would do it. Even if you just buy the rear axle to get your truck back on the road. No sense in spending the money on the rebuild when you can get a used rear end for much less.
It certainly could affect it. Depends on how hot the fire was. Melted seals, and plastic lock out hub parts could be a problem. Brake calipers have rubber seals as well. The heat could affect the leaf springs as well. Anything rubber or spring steels needs to be check carefully or just replaced.
That's too hard of a project. you should send that running gear to me! ha ha just kiddin that is a great find. I have been looking for a d 60 straight axle for my 96 psd for about a year now and can't find anything under $900 just for the front axle. I hope i can get that lucky one day Good luck that swap is actually pretty easy.
