ok, i have been readin alot of stuff on here about clutches and im gettin confused as hell lol.
truck: 1990 f150 5 speed 302.
syptoms: clutch pedal has to go almost to the floor to disengage the clutch and its hard to shift, then sometimes it will be fine, but now it always has to be pushed all the way to the floor. i think there is brake fluid on the outside of the tranny, which would meen its the slave right? or could it be something els?
if its the slave then how do i change it? its in tranny right? or is it external on these trucks? i was going to put the truck up for sale next week so i gotta get this fixed lol. thanks.
Sounds like a leaky slave....if you're lucky it's external....it'll be on the drivers side, right on the bell housing.
If you're unlucky like me, it'll be an internal and you'll hafta pull the tranny to fix it.
In cold weather mine leaks a little....I think the seal in the cylinder is dried up and then gets stiff so either fluid leaks out or air leaks in. Any, in spring it fixes itself with the warmer weather, and I forget about it until next winter.
Your slave would be internal. I would remove the cap from the clutch master cylinder, and don't forget to grab that rubber cup that just sits under the cap, and fill the master cylinder with dot 3 brake fluid leaving room to replace that rubber cup. After several pumps of the clutch pedal your clutch should disengage good until it gets low on fluid again.
