I own a 2003 F250. My local muffler shop offered to make me a "Y" pipe for my truck, installed for $140. They have made them. They do not have a mandrel pipe bending machine. Are there any disadvantages to having it custom made -vs- buying the Stan or eBay "Y" pipe and having it installed?
I would get the stans, ebay(SPD) Y pipe. No mandrel bender equals crappy collapsed bends. The stock Y has decent bends, the necked down spot is what sucks. Your get flutter with either Y.
If the y-pipe hadn't been given to me, and I just clamped it on myself, I probably would have gone to a local shop, told them what I wanted made, and if they could do it with mandrel bends, and would have let them do it. And probably had them do it right from the manifolds all the way down, making sure both sides of the Y were equal length.
There's nothing special about y-pipes. Just the bends.
