Install a 300 or 390 with its original transmission. I belive the T98 will mount to the 300 and FE bellhousing. However,
You need to install or make a engine and transmission crossmember.
390s and 300s are side suported engines utalizing a transmission crossmember for suport. The 292 Y block is supported front and rear with the trany hanging off the engine.
The 300 is my favorite engine of all time and I love the 390 as a go fast powerplant. I can order a basic rebuild from my parts store for about $900 in parts. That is for a complete overhaul, W engine mounts. $300 in machine work and you've got a new engine.
Buying the parts to install the 300 corectly is about $350 assuming youve got a good engine. I wanted to do this myself so I looked into it. That is an aftermarcet crossmember. Homemade trany support, custom drive shaft, and engine mounts. I belive a 390 would be compareable in conversion cost.
The 292 is a great motor. I ve got a 64 F100 w/ one.
If you want more info on converting or help with parts Im sure we will be here.
thanks for info my 292 runs strong light smoking--just todays gas and yesterdays gas maybe nolead would hurt vavles-don't know myself, but driver side exhaust manifold 2 cracks top of manifold middle crack completly pretty soon headers be great got info on headers???price etc.......

Dont own them but I would sugest ramhorns. They are cast iron exhaust manifolds that flow a bit better then stock. No header clearence issues to deal with and no warped header flanges.
Add lead substitute to your gas at every fill. I use CD2 as I find it a great bang for the buck. $8 worth is good for about 250 gallons.
Try adjusting your valves too. Factory spec for 64 is .019.
edit to my second post... i own the stubies not the long tubes... the stubies dont require lifting the engine like i hear everyone else has to do with other type of headers... but they might just be talking about the 352 and 360s and 390s... that they have to do that on...
I know alot of people will disagree but headers are a lot of hype. Very few are designed to benifit in the primary operating range of a truck. In my experience (3 pairs) They all leak. If you plan on seting up at a 5k rev and working there they work. I like cast iron. Headers never seem to seal, add a ton of heat to the engine compartment. Do what you like. My buddy wants them on his 390 68 galixie. WHy not hipo factory cast manifolds?
To each their own. Paint the gaskets with copper headgasket sealent or gold spray paint, Run big washers to spread the force. Good luck and good night.
NOTE: I was considering getting headers till I found the ram horn manifolds. Even a skeptic has his downfall.
