how do you go about removing a 54 grille? where are bolts all at and what size head are they? do you have to remove any other parts to get the grille off?
I believe there are three bolts that go from the inside back edge of the headlight cavity (behind the bucket) that extend through the wind break.
So, you need to remove the stainelss trim (headlight door), the headlight bulb retainer ring, then the bulb; lastly the headlight bucket (with plugs and wiring). Way back in the back are the bolts - should be 1/2 inch (I think).
Remove the three bolts then lift up to clear the two fangs from the lower valance and tilt the top up and outwards to remove it.
hm.. there are 3 bolts from BACK of the air dam/deflector in the wheel well area. you shouldn't need to remove the lights.. well, except for the wiring..which you will have to cut anyhow (no connector behind the grill).
then on the 55 & 6 at least, the center upright also has a bolt to the back of the grill.. you can take out this one (a pain when rusted), or you can take out the 2 -top (thru the valence) & bottom (thru the roll/gravel pan).
I don't know if any of the 54 teeth are bolted to the gravel pan..
so, at minimum its 6+2 (center) they are all the 5/16x24 threaded bolts (1/2 in socket)..
I don't know if any of the 54 teeth are bolted to the gravel pan..
Sam
There is a bolt on either side of each "fang" that goes through the sheetmetal and a bent flange on the gravel pan. They are accessible from the underside of the gravel pan and are typically very rusty. I think they are 1/4" diameter/ 7/16" wrench.
So add 4 more to Sam's total.
Good Luck!
yeap, you got the answers you needed, you'll find you may break off some of those bolts as they get fused with weather and road grim...remove all you headlight trim, lights aa well as the parking lights...follow you nose you'll find them all
Yes, you need to pull out the headlights and the headlight buckets. I think the wires have bullet connectors you can disconnect - be sure to label them.
I dunno if this applies, but a Dremel tool with reinforced cutoff wheels came in handy for separating the grille & fender on my '57 panel. It could squeeze into places I couldn't fit an air die grinder or electric angle grinder. The cutoff discs lasted OK, except when I stepped on them.
