Hello All!
To share my experience...filling the case w/5.5 qts is just right!
When filling to 6qts, I observed oil getting into the intake boot and other associated hardware.

i did the same thing. i am getting a little oil mist from the crankcase thru the valve cover, it collects in the folds of the hose to the valve body. i go in and soak up the oil with a paper towel, it amounts to less than a teaspoon full unless you are dragging the lighning then you might get more. next time i will stop at 6.5qts or 6qts like they tell you and mark the dip stick.
Go by what the manual says. I work at a lube rack part time and all the new ford modular motors in trucks have incorrect dipsticks. Ford says they know about it but haven't changed it for some reason.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-May-02 AT 03:03 PM (EST)]I don't have a Lightning, but I believe all the mod motors are the same. 6 quarts (including filter) is adequate. Some of us do 6-1/2, which brings the level up to (but not over) the "max" mark. We like to have the most oil for cooling and contaminant dilution, without taking a chance that the crank will beat it into a froth.

P.S. Of course you've got to change the old oil hot, and make sure it has time to drain.
P.P.S. If you've got an engine oil cooler (I see they are on some Lightnings) that would probably add 1/2 quart, if you can get it fully drained.
I just changed the oil yesterday, and put exactly 6 quarts in there. I put 5.5 quarts, but it only filled up to the bottom add mark on the dipstick, so I just threw in the rest and now it sits in between the 2 marks. Also, something interesting, is that right after I changed the oil, my engine now makes a wierd diesel type noise while idling. It's it wierd because lots of people are having this noise pop up right after their 1st oil change.
