i have a 1997 F-150 standard cab short bed 4x4 with a 5.4 with 190k miles. its burning a little oil, and just getting tired. i'm going to pull the motor and rebuild it, but i have a few questions, and any advice would be greatly appreciated. i have built plenty of ford 460's, but this is my first fuel injected engine build. thank you.
1- where can i get a rebuild kit? can't find one on summit racing.
2- any performance intake manifolds, cams, lifters, or pistons available?
3- what would i have to do to do bigger injectors? fuel pump or anything?
1) Napa perhaps? www.dssracing.com ?
2) I would upgrade heads and intake to 99-up "PI" parts. They flow better and make more power
3) No bigger fuel items needed unless you supercharge or turbo.
what are the "PI" parts? and can i put the cams out of a 2002 Lightning on that motor?
PI parts are cams, heads and intake. On the Lightning question I really don't know but I'd guess the cams are ground for a supercharged application. If thats the case they wouldn't hurt but I'm not sure they work in a NA application that well.
ok thanks. could i put larger injectors on it? i saw different sized ones in Summit Racing, but i'm not sure what size stock is, and how much bigger i should go.
Stock injectors are good for more power than you'll get a N/A 5.4L 2V to make.
JL
Correct. Unless you put forced induction on it the stock size should be ok.
Thanks for the info on the Lightning cams. I know in aftermarket you want ones ground for that application but wasn't sure if they did it at the factory. I know more about Mustang application than I do the trucks but the motors are virtually the same.
