E4od code 29

O/d light started blinking the other day so took truck to tranny shop to get code read it was code 29 a Vss sensor. But could it also be a tach sensor because it seems to be acting weird when the truck is cold. Also where is the tach sensor located. Are the sensors ford only parts or can i buy them at a parts store? Any more info about code 29 would be great. Tranny is rebuilt.

1993 f250 4x4 7.3 idi 125000 mi.

There's a different code for a tach sensor. The tach sensor can't set a 29 code. Only the VSS can set a 29 code.

First of all listen to Mark on anything to do with a transmission.
But to answer your question the tach sensor is right up at the front of the engine and on top of the injector pump mounting housing. It is a very big "bolt" (about 1") with two wire coming out of it. Examine the wires carefully at the sensor as they are prone to crack and touch.
Hope this helps.
