I have a 6.4 PSD, 08 and while traveling with a 8000 lb trailer in tow I experienced something for which I'd like an explanation. Here is the background:
The truck had been a bit "weak" and seemingly underpowered while pulling our travel trailer from the Florida Keys to Orlando. We encountered a heavy downpour in Ft Lauderdale and after driving in this crap for about 45 minutes we pulled into a service area and loaded up on fuel. While re-entering the turnpike (the entrance ramps are located in the medians) I accelerated a bit more than normal as there was heavy traffic. I observed in the rear view mirror a cloud of white smoke, the truck experienced some brief engine miss and seemed to cough up a "lunger".
Since that time the truck seems like a new machine: much more power, acceleration and smooth pick up.
What might have happened?? Any suggestions??
Regen................Sometimes while pulling my 5th wheel up a grade it will feel like a clunk or skip. Checking the info center it reads "cleaning the exhaust filter". There is no loss of power and when it's done it runs just fine.
My job 1 used to do the white smoke/missing feeling thing a lot especially if it was raining. After the latest flash it has not done that. I would check to see if all the flashes are up to date.
The DPF regen has been active, sometimes I think too frequent, and I
think I have had all the latest reflashes but I will check.
Using my iPhone here to post this; a bit clumsy.
Thanks
Sounds real similar to the EGR stories on here recently except they didnt end with more power and acceleration. We are all learning that these trucks dont like to be babied. Seems the harder you drive one the better they run.
Sounds like a pretty normal situation to me too. Especially in the rainy weather. Mine tends to object to hard accelleration when it's raining, combined with a regen cycle it could cough and spit out some smoke. A return to normal is the good part.
I will caution you a bit though: I had similar issues recently, hesitant acceleration, little bit of smoke combined with nearly constant regeneration. Next day my engine light came on and the motor was in need of a new EGT sensor in the tailpipe. So, the third symptom of constant regen cycle is what you should watch for and then watch for the engine light.
Thanks for all the helpful answers. I just returned to the Florida Keys pulling the trailer and the truck ran without any "missing or coughing". It did do the "exhaust cleaning" cycle once but there was no adverse effect. Probably a bit of water, regen cycle or just one of those things not to worry about.
Just a thought, but since these trucks seem suseptible to collecting snow in the air filters, they might also be subject to getting he filters wet or saturated during heavy rain? I hate to think that water would collect enough in the air filter or element to be sucked into the cylinders, even as super-saturated air. I don't know how a re-flash or program change would affect either. Rtaylor's comment about a bit of water makes some sense, but this is just my $.02...regards...joe
Not to hi-jack the thread, but i want to give you an update on my uncles truck that was having the fluttering turbo issues. He had the exact same situation happen to the OP and now claims the truck runs like a champ!

The exact same scenario happened to him. Had a loaded trailer and punched it getting on the interstate and he said it felt and sounded like it was coughing up something then all of a sudden cleared up and turned into a monster. Said its running great now.
Seems that my experience has been shared by others and this forum
is a great place to exchange information. Thanks all.
By the way I experienced another "exhaust cleaning" today
after about 200 miles. This appears to be the interval; once
per tank of fuel.
