how would a not so mechanically knowledgable person try and correct an intake valve stuck in the open (compressed) state? I am learly of taking the head off, and those gaskets are $55 by themselves.
Some details:
-> 226 flathead
-> The push rod comes up and goes back down just fine
A friend suggested taking some "PB Blaster" penetrating fluid and spraying the valve stem and spring, then taking the plug out and putting some down the valve using the straw. His thoughts were that the penetrating fluid should break up whatever has "caught" the valve stem allowing the spring tension to slowly pull the valve back down... the physics of the concept seem right, but something about putting that stuff in the valve trane bothers me.
I have a complete gasket set listed on ebay # 150333961559 , It already has bids and its only $9.99.
I would pull the head and spray and try to turn the valves as well as open and close, rotate engine around and see if they stick open each time, more spray , more turn, ETC
When I bought the V8 flat engine for my panel I had one stuck valve in each of the front cylinders. I soaked with WD-40 and tapped them down throw the spark plug hole. I alternated gently tapping down and bumping the engine over with the starter. Tool about ten minutes for each valve. Has worked fine for the last two seasons.
got 'er popped back down last night during the tornado... looking forward to redoing the compression test and hopefully its all good so i can put it all back together. I'm getting really tired of leaning over the fender.
Oh Bob, that is some funny stuff right there. Since I recently started my 55, and hot out the mice and nesting material out the exhaust it could only be funnier if you had a cartoon that showed the mice being blown out the exhaust pipe.
Thanks so much Bob. I just saved that to my desktop. That is almost what it looked like behind my truck sunday afternoon plus all the nesting material.
