For those who have had their valve springs removed, did you also replace your valve stem seals at this time? How many miles were on the engine and what condition were they in? I have been experiencing what seems to be a little oil smoke when taking off after a short idle. I have been thinking of doing a compression test, replacing the seals, and doing the Comp 910 springs. I just wanted some feedback on the valve stem seals and their possible life expectancy. I currently have 180k miles on the clock.
Thanks in advance!
I don't have first hand knowledge, but I read it on the internet so it must be true. I think the general consensus is if your gonna do the springs go ahead and do the seals. Seems like I saw they're only about $60. I might be wrong though. It appears that they start showing signs at around 200k. Both of the powerstrokes in my stable smoke some blue at startup and warmup and both are right at 200k. You using alot of oil? I'd do as you stated and hit it with a compression test and see where your at. I just read some stuff on a build and the guy was saying he went with ford springs cause they have about 40lbs of seat pressure on the 910's. Once again, just something I read.
I purchased the truck in '02 with 44k miles. It has always used 1qt of oil to ~3k miles. I noticed the smoke more in the last several months. Has the "normal" smoke at start up when cold and warm up. It just seems to be "puffing" when taking off. Tailpipe soot appears dry. It seems whatever oil comsumption it has is being burned off or caught by my CCV trap. BTW, I drain a few ounces of oil out of the trap when it's time to add. So some oil is simply getting separated out and discarded.
I seriously doubt that your oil consumption is going out through the stem seals.
There is no vacuum in a diesel engine to draw it down around the valve stem like on a gasser.
Since you are there, it wouldn't hurt to change them out, but I would be surprised if it made a difference.
A compression test is a good idea.
I'm more suspicious of a tired turbo thrust bearing than anything else.

I am not concerned with oil consumption as it hasn't really changed over the years. It has also remained the same when switching from dino to synthetic. Trying to figure out source of the smoke. I had sort of attributed it the single shot injectors & tuning creating possibly some fuel "loading" at idle.
My 38R has the ball bearing cartridge.
