I am working on doing a DIY reg.return and doing my own filter setup on the frame.
My question is does it matter if you put a reg. fuel filter before the pump or is it better to have a fuel/water separator before the pump and a reg. fuel filter after the pump?
Yes I know the fuel filter has to rated for pressure.
Brad, I put a Fleetguard FS1212 filter with a water stripper (petcock at bottom of the filter) before my pump. I also have the stock filter in place too...it always in perfect condition and no water in the housing at all. I change them both out, once a year.
Brad... shouldn't matter which side, so I think your proposed setup would be fine. you've already covered the pressure rating for the post-pump filter, so that won't be an issue. I've read, though, that you should filter down to 2 microns if you're going to replace the stock filter/housing in the engine valley and the fuel rail port screens at the heads... that way you maintain protection for the injector internals.
it would be ideal to have the water seperator before the pump to protect the pump as well..but thats not real inportent ...it can be after the pump as long as it handles the 70PSI and filters down to 2 micron..i run the 1212 with water seperator Neal posted before the pump..I then crossed a 2 micron CAT filter part ## with napa for a fiter and base...i have that down on the frame right after the pump..
