Not necessarily.

B7A6731A .. Oil Filter Spin-On Type (B7A = 1957).

(B7A6731A was replaced by C9AZ6731A and now it's just: Motorcraft FL1A)

The spin on oil filter was an option on 1957 Y blocks, 1957/1958 on I-6's.

Ford also offered a kit...(which is still available, btw) to install one.

B7A6882A .. Disposible (Spin-On) Oil Filter Adapter Kit.

MSRP: $105.53 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $56.99. (The original price was 10 bucks!)

Fits 1952/68: 215/223 I-6's.

Fits 1954/57: 239/256/272/292/312 Y blocks.

That's really weird! But at least you are making progress! AND the truck is running.

I guess at least now you can take the pump into NAPA or where ever you are getting them, and know how the face and arm have to be configured.

If ALL ELSE fails, you could probably get or make a plate very similar to a delete plate that was discussed earlier when we were talking about electric pumps, and drill out the upper half for the pump arm and install it between the pump and block to block off that lower area.

This is going to sound strange, but ask them if they have a fuel pump just like the one you have, but with the arm installed upside down from yours - just for grins.

The fuel pump block off plate fits all Ford engines except 351C's, 351M's and 400's.

Why does it fit all these engines? 'Cuz the mounting gasket is the same.

All these engines have the pump bolts at 3 and 9 o'clock.

The 351C/351M/400 pump bolts are at 12 and 6 o'clock.

See Julie, I told you I wasn't crazy about the fuel pump.

I might go over to my Napa and see if they have a pump hiding in the cobwebs on some shelf. My local Advanced Auto Parts probably won't have it unless they order it for me.

Hey Kev. Sounds good. I would appreciate the response. Before you hit submit copy your response and then send it in case it disappears again.

Any headway is progress...

Glockem, I'd be happy to come by and help,...no , it's that far , been thru thru your area alot...though not lately.

But I figured you would have your answer to this dilema by now, sounds like you do..
Here's another thought..any of those 5 extra fuelpumps still laying around? How about doing some explortory disassemby..maybe you can drift that arm pin out and flip it over, re-install?? Just an idea
Maybe your engine is just in upside-down.....

You know Mertz, I am willing to try anything to get this fuel pump to fit correctly and if that involves me flipping the engine over upside down and reinstalling it then so be it.

These are the three drawing from the part catalog:

From these drawing it looks like you have a '52-54 fuel pump. The '55 was the latest they show so I am assuming they didn't change for '56. ND said that the diagrams in the books didn't always represent the actual part but the pumps are a 180° difference.

Basic Ford part number 9365 in the three illustrations is the fuel filter.

Just thinking about the fuel pumps, if they made different fuel pumps for the different years that means the blocks have to be different. Were the internals different also? I suppose I could look through the parts catalog and compare parts but it's a lot easier to ask the people who know.

I am a little confused, should he have a manual or should he ask the people that know?

I have the parts catalogs but there's a lot of numbers in them and I don't want to waste my time going through them if I can get a quick answer here.

Yeah but what's interesting about the three pumps pictured (even considering Bills warning about pictures) is tha the second one you posted looks JUST LIKE the pump he has (actuating arm wise) and the other two have either a straight arm or one that is a little curved farther up - not bent up so much. So, maybe hew needs to find one of the other two. That's why I asked if he had ever had it running. This could be a POFUBAR!

Sounds like a variation of my wood design instructor's favorite saying "No matter how many time I recut the board it's still too short."
In this case: "No matter how many times I replace the fuel pump with one that looks just like the one that doesn't work..."
