That's really weird! But at least you are making progress! AND the truck is running.
I guess at least now you can take the pump into NAPA or where ever you are getting them, and know how the face and arm have to be configured.
If ALL ELSE fails, you could probably get or make a plate very similar to a delete plate that was discussed earlier when we were talking about electric pumps, and drill out the upper half for the pump arm and install it between the pump and block to block off that lower area.
This is going to sound strange, but ask them if they have a fuel pump just like the one you have, but with the arm installed upside down from yours - just for grins.

Any headway is progress...
Glockem, I'd be happy to come by and help,...no , it's that far , been thru thru your area alot...though not lately.
But I figured you would have your answer to this dilema by now, sounds like you do..
Here's another thought..any of those 5 extra fuelpumps still laying around? How about doing some explortory disassemby..maybe you can drift that arm pin out and flip it over, re-install?? Just an idea
Maybe your engine is just in upside-down.....

These are the three drawing from the part catalog:
From these drawing it looks like you have a '52-54 fuel pump. The '55 was the latest they show so I am assuming they didn't change for '56. ND said that the diagrams in the books didn't always represent the actual part but the pumps are a 180° difference.

Just thinking about the fuel pumps, if they made different fuel pumps for the different years that means the blocks have to be different. Were the internals different also? I suppose I could look through the parts catalog and compare parts but it's a lot easier to ask the people who know.

Yeah but what's interesting about the three pumps pictured (even considering Bills warning about pictures) is tha the second one you posted looks JUST LIKE the pump he has (actuating arm wise) and the other two have either a straight arm or one that is a little curved farther up - not bent up so much. So, maybe hew needs to find one of the other two. That's why I asked if he had ever had it running. This could be a POFUBAR!
