i recently put cooper all terrain tires on my ex 285/75/16 range d. i do not like the tread pattern and it causes a lot of road noise in the cab and a unsettled ride as compared to highway tires. my mechanic is going to replace them with pirelli scorpians, however, the only tire they make for the ex at 285/75/16 only come in "d" range. if i want the "e" range i need to go back to the 265's. i don't tow right not, but is there a big difference between the "d" and "e"?
If you are not going to tow, then I wouldn't worry about it. The "E" rated tires each carry approximately 300-350 pounds more weight than a "D" rated tire. The "D" tire will generally ride a little better, due to the "E" having just a little stiffer sidewall.
The last letter in a standard tire size indicates the number of layers used in the construction of the tire. If there is no letter, the tire has the standard 4 plies. A "C" indicates 6 plies, a "D" indicates 8 plies, and an "E" indicates 10 plies. The higher the number of plies in a tire, the stronger the tire is and the more air pressure the tire can safely hold. Higher ply tires require more air pressure to maintain proper wear.
Remember that Ford recalled all Excusion tires because they had D range tires and replaced them with E. I still have mine on over 60000 miles, maybe another 10000 before I replace them.
i didn't know ford ever recalled the ex for "d" rated tires. didn't even know they ever came with "d" rated. you just made my mind up for me! headed back to "e" rated tires, hopefully by tuesday.
