Hitch Receiver for

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Dec-02 AT 11:23 PM (EST)]When I bought my '88 F150, it had one of those Hercules diamondplate deep drop bumpers on it. I THINK I found a receiver that will do the trick; it has longer ears to accomodate the extra depth of the bumper. It's an EZ-Lift, the kind where the crossbar with the stinger tube bolts to the frame pieces.

When eyeballing this, the first mounting hole on the "ears" (the side pieces of the hitch) fits to the back of the truck frame, kind of out there in empty space. The middle and rear holes will bolt onto the frame without any problem once the holes are drilled.

There are two heavy gauge steel plates attaching the Hercules bumper to the truck frame. Can I bolt in an "L" bracket of heavy gauge steel to those side pieces, and then bolt up the first set of holes on the ears that are just sorta "out there" right now? Anyone see any safety concerns? Trailer is 2900 dry, myabe 3750 wet.

The bumper itself is rated at 10,000#, but I want a weight-distributing hitch, not just a weld on reciever to the bumper.

Thanks for all help in advance.

I think that should work safely, assuming the L brackets aren't too long. Just remember that the lift bars will be applying a lot of leverage to the hitch. Depending on how long the L brackets need to be, you may want to reinforce them with a gusset.

Since you will need welding work anyway, another option would be to weld tabs onto the front end of the ears, so that they angle over the center of the truck frame rails.
