spring over vs spring under

guys
can anyone advise whether it matters if a trailer is spring over or spring under? My dad just saw my new purchase and he said that I made a mistake by buying a spring under setup. His rationale was that spring unders carry less weight than spring overs? Now Im starting to second guess my purchase
regards
Ben

It is true spring unders don't carry as much weight because you are hanging the trailer from its axle with U bolts where spring over you have more strength. The big draw back is with spring over you gain extra height which you may or maynot like depending on the purpose what is this trailer gonna be used for and whats its carrying capacity.

You could always convert your trailer to spring over you may only have to change the springs and put new perches on the axle but if we knew what this trailer is for then we can give you some better opinions.

Does your trailer carry the weight that it was designed and advertised to carry? If yes and that is what you want then the axle-spring configuration makes no difference.

Trailer designers can design thick enough metal to "hang" the load vs. sit the load on top of an axle. Where the axle is placed is a ride heigth issue.

I agree with Rich, I saw your other posts before you bought your trailer and it sounded like you got as much trailer as you wanted to get. You looked at several, this is rated to hold enough weight, and I'm sure you noticed the deck height when you bought it. What difference does it make where the parts are as long as you're happy with the quality?

Buck
I am happy with the trailer for sure. However, after I purchased it, I heard some people say that the spring under isnt as beefy as a spring over. I thought that I made out on the deal but nothing is more disheartening than to hear someone criticize yr choice. When I bought it, I was looking for load carrying capacity since Im going to be hauling frequent full loads of firewood. The dealer told me that a 6x12 tandem with a 7000 lb rating will be more than enough...then I heard the 'opinions'! Ever buy something new and then have someone close to you tell you 'I heard several bad things about that..' So my question to you is, how would that make YOU feel? Not pretty good Im sure...

Ben

spring over vs spring under

Several years ago I built a 16' tandem trailer in high school. A lot of people critisized everything I chose to do on it. But I built it how I wanted it and how I thought it would work. Now six years later those people that critisized how I built it are calling me up to help them haul cars and stuff. I just smile and say sure, no problem. I get a sence of satisfaction out of knowing that they still don't have a trailer as good as the one I built. I value my freinds opinions alot but you just have to take it with a grain of salt.

ohh yea, mine is a spring under 12,000 pound capacity. and it will haul it to.

spring over vs spring under

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-13-03 AT 03:34 PM (EST)]The spring under is very common in trailers and is a good design. I wouldn't change it unless you have a problem with the height of the trailer. The most important thing is to be able to tow level. Why waste money on changing the springs for no reason.
