Have a 1988 F-150 just had built and installed a new 351w.
Now I find the frame above the right radius arm bracket is pitted through.
Two questions;
1, has anyone had any experience with repairing frame rust ?
2, I am told that this is not a "cast" frame but rails of bent "laminated" stock, that the inner layer of the lamination is of a less noble grade steel ie.. once pitting reaches the inner layer the frame is trash. Any truth to this ?
on an 88 you have a bent extruded steel frame. Once fitting gets to bad, the frame is virtually tash... but if its an area small enough, "say less than 6" x 4" I have had success with cutting out the bad section, "without cutting into the top or bottom, just the web of the frame." with a plasma cutter, and welding in a new piece of steel. Be careful though not to get it too haot when your welding. I have also heard of people cutting out whole sections of the frame and welding in a new piece, but I would avoid this, because I wouldn't trust it.
