Check the electrical connections on ignition/coil, starter silenoid, and battery terminals. Clean and make sure they are tight, especially grounds. Bad component (as 75F350 said) are loose connection most likely!

For the second problem, does it start back on its own or do you have to crank it over again?

Could be the power valve in the carb?

Problem #1

The usual three step scenario of a failing Ford ignition module.

1) Module overheats, engine dies. Module cools down, engine restarts within a few minutes.

2) Module overheats, engine dies. Module cools down, engine restarts in an hour or so.

3) Sooner or later, usually sooner...module overheats...burns out, now the engine will not restart.

Besides the module, inside the dizzy is a stator aka pickup coil...the symptoms can be similar.

Most mechanics replace both at the same time. If the 1977 truck was not sold new in CA, it should have the "blue" module.

1U2Z12A199AA .. Ignition Module (Motorcraft DY893) / 1U2Z12A199AA replaced D9VZ12A199A.

MSRP: $113.62 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $61.36

D4PZ12A112A .. Stator (Motorcraft D1UA)

MSRP: $97.96 // FTEpartsguy.com price: $52.90.
-----------------------------------------------
Problem #2

If the engine bogs down, and/or hesitates from a dead stop or when punching it at speed, the accelerator pump diaphram and check valve need replacing.

This is a very common problem with Ford 2V carbs.

D5AZ9B559A .. Accelerator Pump Diaphram (Motorcraft CM2092) / Note: Fits 1975/79. 1962/74 is not the same.

C4AZ9576A .. Accelerator Pump Check Valve (Motorcraft CM825) / Fits: 1962/79.

Well, let us know, and what did you pay for the module and where did you get it?
