I have a 02 Exp. that has just started to start hard. It usely starts right up. But in the last day or so, it just turns over a bunch before it starts. The engine light does not come on. And it runs fine when it does start. It does not seem to matter if it cold or hot.
Next time you go to start it, try this: turn the key to the ON position for 2 seconds but don't crank it. Turn key off, turn key back on and try and start. If it starts right up, then it could be a fuel pressure problem.
Some Explorers, including mine lately, have experienced INTERMITTENT failure to kick over....meaning everything is fine for weeks/months, then one day it cranks just fine, but doesn't kick over or even seem like it wants to try. You'll need to read up on past posts cause different people have had different luck with EEC relay, fuel pump relay, bad connection at the PCM. Mechanics won't be able to help unless it's doing it when in their hands. Someone recently told me that when you first turn the key and the dash lights come on, check to see if the "check engine" light is on. If not, try to start it. If it just cranks, that's a sign it has something to do with the PCM or connections.
I just got it back from the dealer. They did not find anything wrong. They looked at the fuel pressure, said it was fine.
So they reprogramed the comp. They said ford told them to try that. All this for 150$ !!!!! And they dont know if that was even the problem!!
Had the same problem with my 02 explorer 4.6. turned out to be the IAC idle air controller valve. it is located on the front. side of the throttle body. you can try cleaning it with carb cleaner but this didn’t work for me. I ended up replacing it with one from ford for $90. I had a problem finding one frome advance and auto zone. hope that helps a little
most of the time it would start just fine but about once a month I would try and start it and it would go up to about 500 rpm and just die. some times after that it would just start up but after a while it got worse and I would have to hold down that gas to maintain idle until the iac was able to catch up.
