I don't know what state you live in, but in AZ I have worked in the auto recycling industry and in my opinion (in AZ) the easiest way to get a title is through an Abandon vehicle title. You fill out the form at the DMV and pay a small fee ($20 or something). Call them up and schedule to have them perform an inspection on the vehicle to verify that it is on your property and it is the correct vehicle (VIN check). They check to make sure no one else is claiming ownership of the vehicle and that you haven't stolen it. It takes a few weeks for it to go through the system. Then they send you a new title for the vehicle. I've done this for 2 personal vehicles I have and I know many others who have done this same procedure here.
How good a shape is the '73 in? If it's really nice, I would go to the DMV and see what they say. Keep a smile on your face and a yes sir, yes ma'am on your lips. Their IQs seem to drop in proportion to how your anger rises.
I wouldn't start switching numbers or anything like that. It's not worth the risk!
Keep in mind that we don't have to get '73s inspected in NC, so at least you wouldn't have to worry about that.
I'll probably get flamed for this, but...last option...
You could probably part one or two of them out and get enough to buy a legal one with all the necessary paperwork.

Flamed? A SMALL amount of board members might stoop that low but most realize that he could sell parts that members on here might need to fund getting him a new truck.
I part these trucks out a lot (if I can buy them cheap enough) and get a decent amount of business from fellow FTE people
Here in Ga for a vehicle over 20 years all you need is a bill of sale. If it was giving to you grandfather, then have him write you a bill of sale and take it to the DMV.
I had lost a bill of sale for a parts truck that I was going to use the cab off of, had a friend rewrite one and it all worked out fine, no questions. Always smile and be extra polite.
My sons next door neighbor had a 73 4X4 that had set in his yard for several years. He bought it but never got the pink. He gave it to my son and gave him a bill of sale for one dollar stating that it had been parked in his yard for seven years and just wanted to get rid of it. We loaded it up on a car trailer and took it to a truck scale and had it weighed. We took it straight from there to the DMV in Victorville to have the VIN number verified. My son spent a good hour cleaning the frame so you could see the VIN number and the guy at the DMV looked at the door tag. We told him that we had cleaned the frame so that he could read it and he stated that he didn’t need to that the one on the door was all he needed. My son got it put into his name right there. No late fees, or penalties.
That sounds extremely interesting. Let me do some calling around, and I'll get back to you next week. I want to try the "abandon vehicle" thing first. By the way, is that link your truck? I dig it. That's how I want to tear mine down in the next few weeks. I gotta scare up a steering gear and a wheel and column.
ok, i got my cab today....the guy doesnt have a title, but i found an old insurance card in it and come to find out, i work with the guy that had it back then.....ill ask him monday if he has the title
