price for a good cab?

hello,
I found a good cab at the local auto salvage that is complete with doors, glass, and all interior parts. The interior is what I consider O.K. to good. I was wondering what kind of price to expect for it? The guy at the yard I talked to said the get $200 for a stripped cab (no doors, glass, interior, etc.). And that is if I did all the wrench turning. The way he sounded the complete cab would be pricey, but he didn't give me an exact number. They were very busy and I didn't have the time to wait around for him to go inspect it. So does anybody have an idea what a fair price would be? One other thing, the cab is the same color as my truck so that would make it worth a little more to me.
Thank You

Don't know what part of the country you are in and that may be in line, but in my area of NC that is a little pricey. IMHO

Depending on where you are you still may find a better deal, if you take your time.

Up in maine they're rare, but a friend of mine bought one for his 79, and was around $1200, shipped from texas. The interior was stripped, just doors and dash.

But he "was" building a show truck, so it had to be "perfect".

I think $200 would be a helluva deal for a stripped out cab without rust or repair panels.

After it's stripped he'll be stuck with a mound of parts. I'd make an offer on the complete cab, say four hundred bucks and have the cash in your pocket.

I prefer to hunt stuff via private party and get whole donor trucks.

Around here that would be a good deal. In the northeast no rust doors can bring $200 apiece.

I agree, sometimes to yards seem to get a little greedy. If I go in there and strip down that cab all the parts I take off are going to be left right were I pulled them. They will continue to rust and eventually won't be worth a thing. In my eyes it would be better to make someone a deal on all the pieces.

I have to laugh at these yards that want people to pull parts and not work with them. I have ran into several yards these days that want normally have guys that pull parts but sometimes they want you to either pull the part yourself or wait a few days till they get around to it. I just dont understand these people, I usually see 2-3 guys sitting around BS's but they cant pull parts for me hmm..

I say haggle with the guy if he doesnt want to come down to your price then walk away. I can promise you there are other deals just as good if not better elsewhere to be had.

O.K. I called the yard back and they had looked at the cab in question. I may have been wrong about this guy. He quoted me a price of $350 for the cab with the doors, interior, and all the glass, and the front clip minus the grille. The doors are almost perfect and the radiator support is not rusted bad at all. It seems to me that that is a fair price for everything. Like I said all the parts are even the right color so I won't have to drive around a 10 tone truck while I save to get it painted.

Tell him $300.00 is all that you can scrape up and you are afraid that if he doesn't take it, it will likely be spent on something else.

He aint stoopid. He would probable be glad to get $75.00 out of it, but can't let on.

I think that yard operater is being pretty fair. Complete cabs take a lot less time to swap, paint is getting to be a luxury item and besides that you'll have all the goodies left from your old cab as spares.

Ask if he saved the title (assuming there is one). Some yard owners keep them. I'd ask quietly without an "audience", if ya know what I mean.

400 bucks is what i paid for my whole truck in decent condition, turn the key and drive. and about 5 years ago i paid 600 bucks for my 71. for the whole truck! and i hardly even negotiated. i just showed up with the cash in hand and said well this is what i was able to come up with and they said SOLD. haggle that guy. haggle the heck out of him. that sounds pricey to me for something 40 years old that is a dime a dozen.

Depends where he's located. Where I live road salt devoured most of them 20 years ago. If you find one around here it either gets stored for winter or it came from outside the rust belt.

I am located in western Montana. There seems to be a lot of these trucks around here to be had. I have personally looked at probably 50-60 trucks in the last couple of months, some runner/drivers and most that are parts trucks. In my findings it is few and far between to find one running or not without severe rot in the usual spots. Yes, I have been able to find cheap complete trucks but the majority of them need as much work as the one I have now. I have thought about buying the needed patch panels for my truck, but by the time you add up the cost for two floor panels, both rockers, and both cab mounts, plus the time of installing them, that $350 gets to be sounding better all the time.
Another question though is if he doesn't have the title, will I be able to just switch vin plates on the door to make it legal?

If you do so do it quietly. Make sure to remove the decal on the door post and the build sheet ( if it's still there ) from the seat.

The laws vary from state to state. In PA you could pull that off with these trucks. The newer trucks have a lot more ID numbers.
