Got a 79 F100 regular cab with rotted drip edge and is rusted through door jamb from above doors down past striker behind the doors. Also rusted through at roof-to-drip edge area and at inside of cab just above windshield. Rest of cab (corners, floors, mounts, and frame, etc are excellent). I've thought of replacing the cab or (the cheaper option-preferred) welding patch sections in from 78 x-cab that I have. The x-cab is nearly mint above door striker area but everything else is rusted beyond hope. Could I cut out a section of the cab, say, 2 to 3 inches all around drip edge and weld it into my 79? That is: Would the shape match a regular cab? Am I asking for trouble doing this? I'd hate to throw away the 78 if there was anything that could at all be used.
Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks

Skippy,
It could be done that way if you don't mind a lot of plastic in your truck.
If it were my job to do, I would replace the entire roof & poss. the posts as well
if they are bad enough. If the other truck has a great roof & rear posts, I would separate
the cab corners from the rear cab panel by drilling the spot welds and cut the w/shield posts
about 3 inches down from the roof. Then I would remove the roof from your truck the exact same way.
This can get tricky when fitting the new roof for welding. Make sure to measure & record the w/shield,
rear glass & door jamb areas BEFORE you cut! Make the necessary adjustments and secure into
place with vice-grips or sheet metal screws. Check door fit and glass measurements well before
mig welding the new panels in. Also, cover all glass & upholstery with welding blankets or damp rags
to avoid burns. Hope that helps! :7 I :* my truck!!!
