Question manual conversion?

Anyone swapped in a 5 speed for their E40D?

Would a 5 speed from a IDI truck work with the right flywheel and clutch?

Is it worthwhile to do the tranny swap and all the pedals and such, or find a truck with a blown motor and do an engine swap?

it would be easier to find a truck with a blown motor and do an engine swap. but swapping trannys isnt the most difficult thing either. other than cutting a couple of holes its mostly just swapping stuff over. your speedo will have the auto's gear indicator on it, but if that doesnt bother you it doesnt have to be changed. the steering column and the plastic cover that goes around the steering column are different, but dont HAVE to be changed. you can just remove the shifter and swap the plastic cover.

I did one in my truck about 6 months ago. best thing i ever did.It is a bit time consuming. The tranny i put in mine is out of a 91 so yes the older ones do fit. I bought a luke single mass clutch and fly wheel for it. you don't want that duel mass stuff.the only thing i did extra was change the up pipes why the tranny wasn't in the way, makes life easier. They were showing signs of leaking a little bit.Other then that i will list the parts 5 speed and tcase 1356,clutch and brake pedals, different cross member for a Manuel also or if need to you can make one like I almost had to mines off a 1990 f-150 5speed truck so they do work , slave cylinder unit that goes from fire wall to tranny ,new clutch and fly wheel, a Manuel brain ,and a Manuel tunnel cover for the stick to come through.I had to modify my stick due to the different years in truck and tranny.truck is a 97.i had to put a bend in it and lengthen it twords the driver no big deal though. If you have help during this one can pull on the master and brake booster out enough so the other one can slip the pedal assembly in with out removing the whole dash.Other then allot of messing around its a bolt in type of deal. Then you will need drive lines also.Front will be shorter back will be longer.Just keep asking questions if you need answers.

Did you use the flywheel and clutch listed for a IDI truck or the Powerstroke?
I know the trans will bolt up but they used different clutches and flywheels...

I swapped in the ZF5 from a '93. When I had it apart, I put in a single mass flywheel. One of the better mods I've done.

I'm sorry I should have specified on that, I ordered one for mine,so a 97 power stroke and it fit the tranny and the truck.there is a spacer on the crank you have to remove with the auto fly wheel so the manual fly will fit also.Ya ibeleive the trannysare all the same spline whys so you just want to make sure the clutch you get fits your motor.

Ok. Sounds good.

Just curious... anyone know if the motor mounts are the same between the IDI and Powerstroke?

I've got a '88 F350 4x4 back home with the IDI and a 5 speed... Could I swap my motor into that truck?

motor mounts are the same. and yes, you can swap a PSD into the 88. you just have to switch all the electronic stuff over to it as well. if youre familiar with mustangs, it would be the same as putting a fuel injected 5.0 from a 1991 model into a 1984 body. same size engine, same motor mounts, but different internals.

Are the frames the same between the '88 and the '95? They are both Crew Cab long beds. I wonder if the body mounts would be the same... could just swap the motor and body all together. Hmm.

It would be much less work putting the ZF into your truck!

the flywheel bolt holes are different from a psd to a idi. that is the only difference you will find with the swap. the clutch pedal from a 88-91 will not fit, you have to find a clutch pedal from the same body style truck. driveshafts from older trucks like 88-97 are the same for the 5 speed

Hmm... not sure if it would just be better to wait a couple years and buy a different truck or do a swap. I want my truck to be 4x4 and manual, which my '88 is, but with the powerstroke from my '95.
I have most of the parts to do it, just a lot of work...
