i have a 7.3 turbo diesel and i have tried two diffenant E40d trannys and both do the same thing pop and grind when i put it in reverse what could this be and also how hard would it be to convert to a manual becides pedals and driveshafts
i am a die hard ford person, i jus have had no luck out of the e40d, i also have a 91 diesel with a manual tranny, and a 92 300six manual, and have not had one prob with the driveline, both will pull a train. i just dont know what to do with the autos
I'd say somrthing ain't quite right with the truck itself, if two different transmissions experience the exact same issues - maybe it's the rear axle gears not meshing right? Only time I've heard an automatic grind was when she was all out of trans fluid, grinding is something typical of gears and there ain't many of those inside the E4OD, however the rear end gears can and will make all sorts of nasty sounds if there's something going on in the diff.
Is it possible your downpipe is pressing against the floor seam of the cab? Mine will make a loud growling noise in reverse if backing up a hill and it sounds awful, but there is no harm done to anything. The engine and body will flex quite a lot in opposite directions and thats completely normal. If its indeed just your down pipe, then get under there with a big crow bar and bend a little harder on that floor seam to make it stop, but like I said, it won't actually damage anything.
