Basically there is a bundle of wires with a white wrapper that labels it as PTO. The wires are numbered and you can put whatever you want on them.

Have fun and welcome to the forum!

My wires in the engine compartment are dead. Do you have to do something to them to make them work with the upfitter switches.

You do not want the wires marked PTO; there is another bundle of wires behind the fuse panel that come from the upfitters. These wires are positive and are on with the key only. I don't recall the color of the wires you're looking for, but a search should turn that info up.

The responses are getting wild here. I wonder if I can help.

The output leads from your upfitter switches are found on the back side of the fuse block under the steering wheel. Pull the access cover off, remove 4 bolts to drop the fuse block down, and find the 4 flying leads near the connector on the upfitter harness. They are all 4 Orange with different stripe colors. Two are heavy gauge wire (30 amp) and 2 are light gauge wire (10 amp). Each of those will be 12V+ when the switch is on. For negative/12V-/ground, your whole chassis is the ground for your pump/lights/whatever. Don't expect two wires from each upfitter. There will only be one.

The wires under the hood are completely different. All they do is penetrate the firewall, and are flying leads on both ends. They are not connected to anything until YOU connect them to something. You can use them with an upfitter if you wish. And you will find them under the dash very conveniently located near the upfitter flying leads. Just be careful, because they are not heavy enough gauge wire for your 30 amp upfitters. Ford should have made two of them heavy enough to match the upfitters IMO.

I wrote this recently. It might be helpful:
