My son has a 2006 f150 4x4 extended cab with the 5.4. When I was driving it last weekend I noticed a when turning from a stop it shudders a bit. Once straightened out it drives smooth. It felt a bit like the 4x4 was engaged but it wasn't showing on the dash. I was also wondering if it could be a bad CV. Is it possible that the 4x4 could be engaged? I am not familiar with the 4x4 on his truck, does it engage in the transfer case and front end?
I have the chatter you described on my Excursion from the rear end. On my sons truck it feels like it's come from the front. For the 4x4 on my ex its the transfer case and hubs locking in and out. Looking at the 150s front end I see it has CV joints. Excuse my ignorance, but how does the 4x4 lock in on an 06 150? When I had my son drive forward when I watched underneath, both axles were turning to the front differential with 4x4 disengaged. Do the hubs lock in or out? I assumed that the hubs were always locked and it went in and out at the differential.
I had the CV go out on my 04 F150 and the only time I had problems with it was when I was going down the highway. It never caused a shudder when turning. I would bet that it's the L/S rear end staying locked up because on my truck that can make a pretty unnerving noise. As for it being 4x4, when my truck is in 4x4 it is pretty painful for the front end to be in gear and try to turn on hard surfaces, it's like the front end is just trying to hop across the ground. To check and see if its the front end being locked in, just put it in 4x4 at a stop sign and feel how it turns. If it makes the same noise or has the same feel then maybe that is your problem. I'm just throwing ideas out there...
My POS 04 fx 150 had the rear diff shudder/vibration and had it "fixed" 3 times!!!!! Then the highway vibrations started and then the low speed/turning shudders started. Yup, the rear diff was "fixed" and then had clutch packs "fixed" what the frig are clutch packs anyway!?!??!?! And why oh why are there so many problems with a $36K vehicle? Arrgghhhhh......
Ok, thx for letting me vent... Good luck with the repairs and you might want to take a look at all the TSB's for these crappy trucks.

The only crap here is your attitude, and you should take it elsewhere for it is neither helpful nor wanted.
