I received one several times on my 96 Bronco, concerning the speed control switch on the master cylinder. I was working in my yard last month, a couple hours after parking O.J. (white Bronco) I smelled what I thought was one of my neighbors burning trash. I looked towards O.J., and saw smoke pouring out from under the hood, and slightly bubbled paint on the hood too. I ran to the house and grabbed the garden hose, ran back to the truck, and sprayed through a hole that was burned into the plastic inner fender/wheel well. I wasn't going to pop the hood, until i figured it was pretty much out. I learned that from being a former volunteer fire fighter. I opened the hood and sprayed it down real well. I felt a little sick, because I knew it was my own fault.
The master cylinder was melted, as were the switches on it, and about 10 other wires. I bought a used master cylinder on eBay for $20 and free shipping, and it had the switches with a short length of the wires as well. I used some wire I had of the same gauge, a soldering iron and some shrink tubing to replace the burned wires. After installing the master cylinder and bleeding the brakes, O.J. is almost as good as new. I still need to address the hole in the wheel well, but at least he's on the road again. Now to do something about the recall. I may not be so lucky next time.
Sorry to hear that. I know what it's like to have fire claim another victim. I put off getting my 93 done for a long time and finally got it done about 6 months back. Makes me glad I did. Best of luck with it.
