Im building up an 84 bronco it has a 351W with a 4inch lift and 35/12.50 all on it when I got it. I was wanting to know what should I do with it for good TQ, and the ability to take long trips with little danger to the motor and trans. and what the biggest tires i can run with the lift, and what the stock trans, rear gear ratio and axels are in it all stock other than lift
first buy yourself a haynes manual. this will help you 10 fold.
for the lift you have those tires are max with out major trimming of the fenders. it has a D44 TTB front end but the back diff could be either a 9" or 8.8 as this was a transition year for those differentials. There should be a door tag with some info which you should post up. this will help us help you. If you have an auto tranny in there its gonna be a C6 which is a 3speed.
with your current setup the best way to build torque is for a gear upgrade front/rear. running 4.10's or 4.56 would out way any motor changes you could make with keeping it reliable.
If you have a factory 4bbl it's probably a 351HO, the's not much worth doing besides longtubes and decent exhaust. As stated gears should be your first priority though.
Check the oil EVERY day, and keep track of the amount you lose per 1000 miles. Anything over a quart is a sign that you have leaks or are burning the oil through the motor. The factory vacuum lines are a spaghetti-cluster on top of the intake, and any leaks can be hard to trace. All of the emissions parts are obsolete from Ford, so the local parts store may help with replacements. Watch for fuel leaks around the carb, too. When I lifted my 84 6", I still had a bit of rubbing in back with 35's. But that same kit I sold to and installed on another 84 bronco allowed him to run 36's. A gear swap to 4.56's will help alot, even if you have the 3.50 or 3.55 gears. JSM84
