The rain has returned and I am poised with new replacement pulleys for the idler, tensioner, and power steering pump. If the squeal returns, I plan to install them one at a time to see which one is the culprit. The idler and tensioner pulleys are Gates.
Maybe try using, or fashioning a stethoscope from a piece of tubing or broom handle, to pinpoint the culprit.
The weather guessers say it's gonna be partly cloudy Friday, so maybe you'll be able to get to it then.
Will be interesting to hear what you find.
I've been running Dayton Polycog belts on both the Rangers 4.0L & Taurus 3.8L for several years now & both are wearing well & are running a little quieter than the OEM belt.
I hear good things said about the Goodyear Gator Back belts too, but have not used them.
As an aside, I keep the old OEM belt under the seat, or in the trunk as a back up, because if that puppy breaks, we're dead in the water!!!!
Good call there , Rodger on the power steering pulley. It had 3/8 "
play in the shaft. I was not looking there so cudos for that word of advice.
I have a new power steering pump on order with no play in the shaft ,that should prevent the belt from misaligning, thus the squeal
.
I had a chirp with mine about a year ago. I was looking it over and the tensioner pulley was out of alignment with the other pulleys causing the belt to run off center and rub on the water pump pulley. It's kind of an unorthodox fix, but I took the pulley off the tensioner and turned a crown on it to get the belt to run on center. That was a year ago and it hasn't chirped since.
Ive got a 2003 Ranger Edge 3.0 Mine does it only when it gets wet. Like if we get alot of rain and I take a puddle to fast and get a little water in the engine bay it starts to squeal then. But other than that I dont ever have a problum with it.
I had someone tell me the cam synchronizer was a possibility. Then I looked
at the camshaft pulley and I looks like it is rotating unevenly.the belt groove is worn shiny smooth .I think it was damaged when the truck got totaled.
Thanks for all the ideas.
