My '96 F-250 PS Automatic sometimes shifts really hard. It doesn't happen every time I drive the truck. Only now and then. When it shifts hard it does it between all gears. I have not experianced hard shifting when I floor it.
This issue can come both when the truck is cold and after reaching operating temp.
Oil looks fine and oil/filter is 2-3 years old/2000 miles
Tranny has never had any work done to it. The truck has about 95000 miles on it.
There are no other problems with the trans. It doesn't slip or stall and OD works fine.
Any ideas? Will new oil and filter cure it? Cleaning VB?
Thanks
i would also like to know about this as my 95 auto does the same thing. it slams gears so hard sometimes it'll break the rears loose make me do a mini burn out almost.
If no OD flashing.
A WAG is sticking valve/valves.
Which valves depends on all shifts or independant shifts ect.
This goes for up and down shifts, TC locking ect. Also could be in a spring/springs. (weak or broken).
Testing of the line pressure while driving can narrow down the issue.
If its in all gears, its possible the trans will have to come out to get to the parts to be checked/replaced.
The new software here at FTE is the pits!!!
Stays like this it will just be another SEE YOU LATER as in much.
Thanks! Can you please explain how you run a line pressure test? And how the test result can lead to the issue.
If there is a valve issue is it something that can be fixed by a hobby mechanic? I would appreciate some more info around this. Can these hard shifts make damage to the trans? (It sure feels like it will..)
Thanks!
The only thing that happends when I push the OD-on/off button on the gear lever is that the trans shifts down from OD to 3rd and the "OFF" light on the lever comes on. Just like it has always been. Is there another OD lamp in there?
My truck used to shift hard and you could hear it with the window, one day she quit and the shop said it was the valve body not functioning properly that caused the rest of the damage. so don't drive it too much like that.

Just means the lamp is working. If you had codes it would flash.
Best is to get a ASTG manual/cd for the E4.
Get 1 online. It will help you understand things
that need to be tested.

Thanks! Do you know where to find a download manual?
As for the trans: It doesn't shift hard very often. Today I drove the truck 100 miles and I think it did this weird thing only twice. Does this say anything? Did these trucks only come with the E4OD as automatic?
Thanks

My post was a typeOOOOOOO.
ATSG is correct.
I would not use any of the free downloads on the net to get it!!!
You will get more than you bargain for.
Anything would be just a guess. Testing is needed.
