on my way to work this morning,my 81 302 4sp od 2wd started to act as if i was running out of gas.i pulled over and the truck idles fine, but when i pulled out i get into second gear and it does the same thing.turned the truck around to head home and it ran fine.i noticed when i got home there was fuel leaking from the accelerator pump.totally baffled me.the truck pulls hard in first and second gear but third gear it's a dog, can't use the overdrive.i have put a new cap and rotor, plugs and wires, oil and filter and fuel filter.i was wondering if i should rebuild the 2bbl or put a factory 4bbl intake and carb on the the 302.both tubes running from the exhaust manifold to the choke assembly are broken off the manifold,so i was thinking of putting a manual choke on the 2bbl if i rebuild it.iwas just wondering if i will have issues.maybe i will go with an edelbrock intake and carb. just looking for another opinion and maybe some advice. thanks guys
Rebuilding the 2bbl carb will cost you about $20 if you do it yourself. The 4bbl route will run you well over $100 possibly up to $500 depending on whether you find the parts new or used. If you have the money and time, I would do the 4bbl swap, better economy and performance.
Syco's got the right idea on the carb swap. My experience is that the 4V drinks more gas but that is due to my lead foot. Either way, you should fix the choke tubes; gas milage will improve. It's not such a bad job, the only tough part is drilling the rusted tube ends from the manifold. On a 302 you should have plenty of room to work, I would imagine. keep us posted.
Sounds like the pump diaphragm has ruptured. This is an easy fix, only takes a maximum of 30 minutes if its your first time. Any parts store with a selection of Help brand parts will have it. 4 small bolts, swap the diaphragm and your back on the road. Oh and you will need to know if you have the Holley or Motorcraft 2 barrel.
i decided to rebuild the 2 barrel.took me two hours to clean the carb.the power valve was shot, the rods that slid up and down with the throttle were seized full open.use 2 1/2 cans of carb cleaner intalled all the new hardware ,put the carb on.the engine runs great.going to do some fine tuning in the morning.truck has alot more power now.i decided i'm going to slowly gather performance parts over the next year , put another engine together and drop it in next year. thanks for the reply guys .brian.

I'm planning to do the same thing. (rebuild my 2 barrell, build new motor to drop in next year)
Where did you get your rebuild kit from? I had trouble finding one for my carb and ended up paying $65 for it.
thats what they quoted me to. nearly fainted when he told me the price. they said it was $400.00 for a rebuilt carb. i can buy a new one for that price.
