Question Easy engine swap???????

I have found a very nice 89 f-250 with a 460 in it. You know where I'm going with this, dont you?

Well I was thinking about an engine swap to a 351 or ? Altho nice to have the 460, I wont need that much with what and how often I tow. But this truck is really SHARP.

Probably letting my emotions drive me on this one.

Do you think the change would even be worth it, I've heard guys say they get 9-13.5 in thier 351 vs. most in the 460 group say 9-10 loaded or not.

Thanks for any input, Bill

the 460 to 351 swap i belive would be a bit more involved then its worth, you would need a new trans cause the one behind the 460 wont mate up to the 351, a new wireing harnes. i'd think it woud be easer just to keep the 460

I agree with Tom on this. Besides the maybe 3 extra fuel milage would take a long time to realize considering the cost of the down grade.

To swap a speed density 460 with a speed denstiy (or MAF) 351 involves swapping out the motor, trans, and ECM with the entire engine wiring harness. In my opinion, that swap is not worth the trouble. Like truckertom21 says, "if its paid for", the little you may or may not gain in mpg would not be worth it, again, my opinion.

I really doubt there is very much difference in the two engines as far as MPG goes, my bet it won't be enough to notice. The other 351/460 estimates were different trucks with different drivers..

Sure won't be enough difference to be worth a swap!!

Just my $.03 (inflation you know!)

Thanks guys. I was thinking the change would not be worth it, even more now that I know theres more involved than a simple engine swap.

I had been looking for a 92 f-150 with the 300-6 or 302 for more of a daily driver, then came across this 89 f-250 with the 460. I guess I'm just going to have to decide what I want more and whats more practical. Buy this sharp 89 or keep looking for the 92-6.

Thanks again, Bill

I'm not positive, but I believe Ford didn't put a OD auto trans behind the 460 until they put the E4OD behind it. I believe that was in '92. If I am correct, then the '89 would have a C6.
