I have an '86 F-250 Supercab with 351W, ZF5, NP208. Rear main seal is leaking onto clutch causing chatter after about 15 mins of driving. Is it possible to replace the seal without removing the engine? What is involved? Doesn't look like a whole lot of room to move the pan. I also have a suspicion this may be a one piece, which would be even more of a pain I imagine, as I've never done a 1 piece seal, but it involved removing the transmission. When I swapped the trans in last year I should have just pulled and freshened the motor. Oh well. So anyone done this before or know if it's 1 or 2 piece seal?
Also I have a 460 ZF5 trans and have plenty of choices for getting a 460 locally. If this is gonna be a big job or involve pulling the motor I'd just as soon pick up a 460 freshen it up and drop that in. I do tow with the truck and the 351W is a bit sluggish with a load.
I just had a real quick question to add to CADUNKLE's (although our engines are one year apart). I have a similar problem with my '85 351, but I could have sworn on a stack of bibles I saw in a Ford tech manual that included '85's that said that rear main seal was a two piece. But all I can find is the one piece in the stores for that year. So I was wondering what year did Ford change from the two to the one piece rear main seal?
I know it's just wishful thinking on my part, but any clear defination would be helpful.
Thanks Guys
