2001 Excursion 7.3L 4x4. I'm going to change the fluid and need approximate capacity. I know the owner's manual says something like 16-17 quarts, but how much will really drain out when I pull the pan? I'm using full synthetic, and don't want to buy any more than I'm going to need.
I have a different truck but same transmission,
late last year i used about 19 quarts but then i had to drain about one out because it was showing on the dipstick i was too full, when you drop the pan less than half will come out, you have to drain the torque converter and the coolant lines to get all of it out.
you can always take back what you have left and get a refund

Good advice. Be sure to drain the torque converter as well as the pan. You will find a bung on the bottom of the bellhousing, remove it and turn the engine round until the drain plug comes into view. You probably will need around 16qts.
