Paint Equipment (and technique)

My Dad bought an Ameri-spray hvlp sprayer about 10 yrs ago, and I used it to paint my '73 F100. It worked, but I got orange peel over the entire truck. It could easily be my skills, type of paint (acrylic-enamel), mixture, additives, etc., but the sprayer just never seemed to do what I wanted it to do. The air out of the turbine is hot -- is that my problem, or is that typical of hvlp turbines?

Now, Dad is looking at the Apollo 1000, so he can spray latex, and so I can try again on my F100 and paint his '69 Camaro.

Does anyone have any experience with the Apollo? Anyone recommend better equipment in the same price range (the Apollo is $899 on a show special in NC)?

I hope this isn't too late for you.

I've use a TIP HVLP system since 1993 and love it. I use less than half what other painter use.

The turbine does heat the air (just like the exhaust of a vacuum cleaner). You need to use solvent that is a range or two higher than the room temp. It will dry slower and allow the peel to "flow". Don't put it on too heavy or you will get runs/sags.

Supposedly, the old syle high pressure guns will force the paint to lay flatter but produce a lot of overspray.

I colorsand and buff anyway, so I'll stick with my HVLP.
