Anyone have first hand experience with using a dedicated turbine HVLP system, such as accuspray or other?
If so what system did you use? How many stage compressor, what gun, what type paint did you spray, what was the results? I am considering investing in a 3 or 4 stage compressor. I like the portability and 110V electric, no elaborate driers needed (it's typically 90% + humidity here in the summer) No huge $ compressor. I am likely to be spraying epoxy primer, 2 stage Urathane. Will want a good functioning full size and touchup gun to do a full repaint on my 56 Panel.
I seen a Wagner HVLP at Lowes today and was wondering the same thing.I like the idea of not having a big compressor but,the price of a decent compressor and conventional gun seems about the same.
Not if you want to use a HVLP gun. The conversion (high pressure in) HVLP guns consume a LOT of air, you'll need at least a 7HP 2 stage compressor with 60+ gal tank (1500.00 up) then if you live anywhere the humidity gets above ~50% you'll need a high quality high volume air dryer and oil trap and/or a refrigerated air cooler (3-700.00). You'll also have to plumb your shop to bring the air to where you need it (couple hundred if you are good with gaspipe plumbing and can do it yourself, double that to have it done)
To finish off you'll need a good spraygun if you plan on using high build epoxy primers and basecoat clearcoat finishes (150.00-400.00). Don't waste money on an off brand low end gun unless you are just going to do undercarriage or single stage (enamel) paint.
The Wagner HVLP system gun is designed for spraying household finishes, latex paint, enamels, varnishes, not automotive paints.
The top of the line accuspray system is designed from the get go for automotive finish spraying. You get everything with their 4 stage turbine (strong enough to run 2 guns) for <1000.00 including what many consider one of the best turbine guns on the market. You can also get the Accuspray gun with a Citation 4 stage turbine which has an integrated forced fresh breathing air hood for ~ 1300.
I just bought a Citation 3 stage turbine with and Accuspray 10G HVLP gun and the integrated fresh air breathing sysyem. I wanted the fresh air system in order to spray paints with isocyanurates and thought it would be cheaper in the long run to get the combined system. Having painted DPLF and K36 with it so far I would offer the following comments:
1. I would spring the extra couple hundred bucks for a 4 stage turbine in order to get the higher output at the gun. Painting with the 3 stage seems to be a little slow and the spray fan is not as wide as I'm used to with a non-HVLP gun on a compressor. Maybe thats just one of the differences with HLVP.
2. There is much less overspray and you use less product as well.
3. You need to add more reducer otherwise due to the heated turbine air the product goes on dryer than normal.
As I said I just got this unit so the jury's still out.
