I installed my coolant filter two weeks ago and was wandering on when to change the first filter and the second? I've read to feel the hoses to tell if they are hot. When I felt them the first time they were hot and now they're warm. Also does any one know the non charged filter # (napa)for the baldwin? And one more thing where can I get a filter cutter/opener?

I put 20,000 miles on mine before I changed it. I could not get the hot hose, warm hose or cold hose feeling on mine indicating it was filtering.
I don't know the NAPA # but the Baldwin # is B5134.
To cut it open put the screw on end in a vise and take a hacksaw and cut the case about a 1/2" below the flange. Keep rotating the filter in the vice until the can is cut all the way around.
OBTW - I found next to nothing in my filter so now I know why my return hose did not get colder indicating a clogged filter.

When I installed mine I drove it a bit but not hard! Due to the fact of something I read about EGR COOLERS blowing due to TINY BUBBLES in the flow ect. When I got home all hoses were hot .
Dieselsite recommends changing the first three filters at 3 month intervals and then yearly starting with the 4th filter. Of course, you should keep an eye on the flow and change the filter if it becomes clogged before 3 months. However, it really depends on how many miles you drive per month and how much grit is or isn't in your system. I followed dieselsite's recommendation but probably could have gone longer on my first filters as I still had coolant flow through the filter even after 3 months. I've heard of others changing after just a month because their filter had becomed clogged.
I changed my first one after 3 weeks and my second one at about 2 months. I'm going to do my 3rd change tomorrow. Each of the first two showed the filter loaded with sediment ( pouring muddy water out of the filter) and after cutting it open I found lots of grit in the pleats.

I'm sold.
Thats what I'm thinking due to the hoses not being as hot. What filters are you using?I only got the one with the kit and plan to change mine next weekend. Also while I'm at it I'm gonna add a sight glass (performance fuel filter) from autozone and take out the little filter.

I'm using the Baldwin 5134, Get them from Acklands Grainger for about 11 bucks each. I buy about 4 at a time.
