I havent posted in a long, long time. I am currently deployed in Kyrgyzstan for a couple more months and want to buy some things for my truck and a van turbo is one of them. I already bought the non ebpv pedestal have been watching ebay but can`t seem to get a line on a van turbo. I want this because I am trying to get lower egt`s for towing and will probably do some injector upgrades and adrenaline hpop after I get my BTS trans so this is why i want the van turbo. Hopefully this is the correct path to take. I have done the diy tymar, 4" exhaust, ww, ccv, x-over line, evans coolant, predator programmer, and still am not impressed with the stock turbo for pulling. I hit around 1200+ post turbo with around 110 deg ambient temp when im pulling hard. It seems strong only sometimes and sits around 23psi on grades with the stock tune. I am still getting educated on motor upgrades so forgive me if I sound uninformed knowledge wise. So I guess I am looking for advice also on how to get the best towing performance with power and dependability in mind. Before you say it I am putting my pyro to pre turbo when i get home. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Well atleast you got the one thing lined on the pyro. Vans are HARD to find I lucked out on mine and got it for 275 rebuilt. You are really better off getting a stock turbo rebuilding it and getting the kit that Rons Turbo Service sales and turn your turbo over to a Van turbo for the most part. Check out his site on E-bay.
Also to help with your EGTs you might want to look at regearing that beast with an 8in lift and 38s it would REALLY help you out and lower your EGTs considerbly just some food for thought. Along with some custom programming would also help out a great deal in the long run as well.
1200 *POST* turbo?? That's mighty hot, man!! You should keep it below 1250ish *PRE* turbo. The van turbo will lower your EGTs, no doubt. But you'll have to ditch the Predator -- you'll need custom tuning with it to minimize the lag on the bottom end. Other than moving the EGT probe to a pre-turbo position, I think you're on the right track.
I got my van turbo off eBay for about $200, then added a rebuild kit, non-EBPV stand, and custom outlet adapter (MUST have for putting a van turbo in our trucks), and ATS housing. All told, I'm into mine for $900. Had I seen that Beans had a D66 for our trucks for $1300, I would've been all over that one!! However, that turbo has been taken of their site and I haven't seen it back since the end of '08.
...and have nearly a van turbo -- but if you are serious about getting injectors, then I'd hold out for the 1.15 housing (van turbo exh housing) instead. The 1.0 housing is good for stock sticks, but will not support the same level of drive that the 1.15 will.
Thanks for the replies back guys. I am definately ditching the predator and will eventually go with the DP tuner but my priorities are moving pyro to pre-turbo then, van turbo, DP Tuner, BTS tranny, HPOP, then injectors. I tow a 30ft Keystone raptor that weighs in around 8400lbs empty. I have already regeared to 4:56`s so i am good. I love this motor but I need a little more towing power with still being able to have fun unloaded. Does the D66 have a 1.15 housing? I see beans has one for sale but I dont see any specs or info on it. Could you enlighten me a little? also I am very serious about doing the injectors and I guess I will update my signature also, lol.
That D66 is for the early 99s -- won't fit in our trucks. They had one for the 99.5-03s on there a while back, but I haven't seen it in months. If you get lucky and they have it when you're ready to buy, then I'd do it. I'm not sure what the exhaust housing specs are, but I know that turbo moves enough air for well over 400HP. More than your 2002 will handle without a lot more mods to the engine. I have an '02 with a van turbo and plan on keeping it around the 375-400 mark. I have fuel mods, & injectors left to do. I'm not worrying about the HPOP until the injectors are done -- hybrids use a LOT less oil than the stock split-shots, so I shouldn't need to upgrade the pump. If you go hybrids, you won't either. Just keep it at 400 RWHP or less, and you *should* be okay.
You are definitely on the right track!! So you're in Kyrgyzstan -- where are you coming home to? I was in Iraq over the summer -- about 5 months in the northern area.
Ok, I am trying to get a 1.15 housing to make my own van turbo but I havent been able to find one on Rons turbo store. I found one at beans but it is expensive at 445.00. Also it says for a ball bearing turbo, is the housing different than a cartridge turbo? I really do not want to spend that just for a housing with flange. Any suggestions for a correct and cheaper solution guys?
The 1.15 housing from Beans won't fit the stocker -- it is indeed only for the BB turbo. You can get a 1.0 exh housing, but I don't think I've seen a 1.15 other than on a van turbo. Keep your eye out -- they pop up now & then. Take your time & be patient. I set aside the funds and waited, and when one popped up, I sniped it. LOL....
I took the plunge and bought this: shopdiesel.com/_e/loc/product/700213-0005/Garrett_1_15_Non_Wastegated_Exhaust_Housing.htm I e-mailed rons turbo and he replied after I bought this housing and told me the exh turbine is to small on the stock turbo to use a 1.15 housing. Did I just screw the pooch or what? I really hope not! The site says it fits the stock turbo which is why I bought it. Where to go from here guys? Shopdiesel is where i got it if the link doesnt work.
