I have found a 1994 Diesel 250 4x4 with a 5 speed in XL trim. It has a large dent on the passenger side bed and under the window on the passenger rear. I am not sure how many miles on it yet as they guy did not have the keys with him. The shop is applying for the title as the owner has not picked it up in 5 months. The mechanic put remaned heads on it because one of the heads was cracked. I can pick it up for around $1500 bucks. My questions are is this a PSD because it just says Turbo Diesel under the 250 badge and not Power Stroke Diesel. Also how many miles is to many. I realize at 1500 bucks who cares but I don't want to buy and then put 4 or 5 grand in it. I would like to buy it and run it 50 or 100K before to many maintainence items. What are your opinions, thanks
Someone will come along and prove me wrong but I believe the early 94 1/2's had the Turbo Diesel emblem. Anyway, if it has the turbo, its a powerstroke. The 6.9's didn't have a turbo unless they were aftermarket. $1,500 is a good buy, if you don't want it I'll take it, I want to convert mine to a 4by4. If it runs half way good you might be OK without dumping a lot of money into it. Its a tough call.
Old Bird it right about the "turbo diesel emblem. The 94.5 only had that emblem not external PSD badges. Since its a 5 spd there is a very good chance it is a PSD at that is the only way the PSD was offered at that time. No auto until 95. $1500 is a good deal but you may find stuff that needs to be done to it. Also I would quiz the shop on the head issue. I am not sure I have ever heard of a PSD head cracking. It not impossible but it is rare
I believe the door sticker showed a late 93 build date. It is a turbo diesel though I know. Are they idi even with the turbo. I just need a beater to pull trailers locally. I have my 6 blow for over the road twing. Are they still fairly strong. I am pretty familiar with the newer model 7.3 but these older ones I never got into. This would also be a mechanical fired system, meaning no HPOP right? I also have to confirm the mileage. The shop is less than a mile away and I had a freind of the owner tell me about the truck so I went and looked at it. I am taking my diesel back to him to change the oil on mon or tues I will tinker with it while I wait. I will also grab a couple of pics. Keep the opinions rolling so far it does not seem like a steal just a good deal.
No the IDI is a good engine. And its not really gutless. I have only driven one Turbo IDI. I should qualify that I would not buy it cause the performance potential is not there. If you just need a truck to tote around trailers it would probably be a good truck for that as long as it doesn't need a bunch of brake or front end work.
If it has a build date of late 93 it would be an idi with a factory turbo, rated at 190 hp. The early strokes were 215 hp. If both were in stock form there would not be much difference. There are very few bolt on performance mods for the IDIs, but they still perform pretty well. Cavitation is one of the problems with the 7.3 idi if the additives weren't kept in the coolent. For 1500 you could part it out and make money. Just my 2 penneys. Tom
For $1500 you can't go wrong. I own both a factory turbo IDI and a powerstroke. Both are great trucks. It takes a little more mechanical knowledge to work on or modify the IDI and takes a little more electronic knowledge to work on or modify the powerstroke. I can tell you that with a little modifying on the IDI it makes way more than the factory 190 HP.
my 94 f-350 IS a powerstroke engine and has the turbo diesel emblem under F-350 on the sides. It is the original motor and emblems too.
My kid has a 93 ID with almost 400,000 miles on it now. It ran like crap when we got it thanks to so many fuel leaks but after spending about 50 bucks on a filter and new hoses and injector caps it runs like new now. They are all good engines if taken care of properly.
I think O am going to buy it when he gets the paperwork if the guy does not pick it up. I have been reading about these motors and general concensus says pyro, boost guage and exhaust, then turn the pump up, and turn the boost up and that is about as far as you can go without spending tons of money lowering the compression. Any other mod ideas are appreciated.
