So I have a 79 F-150 400m. When I am going downhill or stopping very quickly there is a very abrupt jerking/popping feeling. I have no idea what this is? Any ideas?
Which of "these" are you refering to, did you check to see if there was any play in your drive shaft(while its not running and in park) and your brake drums and pads. Make sure this is what is causing your problem first, before you go buying parts and tearing it apart.
As far as replacing these parts, its all about skill, U-joints aren't to difficult once you do it a couple of times and get used to the process, brake drums are a pain no matter what, but having some knowledge in doing it does make the headach of doing it a little easier. Any more questions just ask.
my truck was making a strange popping noise and i could feel it on the floorboard, turns out my bottom fender bolt was missing so it was bouncing up and hitting the cab and making the loud noise
I doubt its a missing or loose bolt on a fender, because he mentions that it does it going down hill or braking.
Does your truck have a two piece drive shaft?? If it does your carrier bearing could be bad or the mounting bolts to it are broken, missing, or loose. There should be two bolts holding it on, check and see if you have one of these.
It could be the radius arm bushings, but he never metioned anything about the steering or alignent being out, so I didn't mention it. But it could be them though.
