I want to put my 740lb ZTR mower in my truck for service. Will the cables hold the weight of the mower and the ramps, or should I remove the tailgate before loading? Last time I did I scratched it and don't want to if again I don't have to....
I have loaded a polaris sportsman 4 wheeler in the back of my truck with ramps. Im not sure how much it weighs but I know they arent light. I would think you would be fine but dont hold me to it.

Anybody have an idea? 04 FX4.
Thanks.
Remember at no time is the whole load on your tailgate.
Part of its on the ground end of the ramps, and once the front is in the truck bed, just the rear wheels are on the tailgate.
I myself have loaded heavier things than that into my many F150 trucks, and they have been fine.
Is that a guarantee your tailgate will be okay, NO.
But i doubt you will hurt it.....on average at most you have half the load on the gate at once, and since that is only about 370 lbs, i personally would not hesitate to do that to my truck.I tested my tailgate by having myself and some pals stand on the tailgate of my 2004 F150.
The combined weight of us 4 guys was 860 pounds, or roughly there abouts.
We did not break it.
Although I witnessed with my own eyes a nearly brand new toyota tacoma tailgate fail with just 2 guys standing on it in a parking lot.
it was a 2005 tacoma, and while both guys were pretty chubby, i bet they were no more than about 550 pounds combined.
I was shocked to see it break.

My 500 sportsman is about 750 lbs so you should be ok
I believe Ford rates the gates at 500lbs in the dead center (a very conservative figure... safe for the manufacturer). As mentioned above... at no time is ALL of that weight on the gate. I loaded my 600+lb ATV more times than I could count, on my old 06.
I've had 2500lbs in the bed with the tailgate down. Enough load on the tailgate that I now have a 6" diameter 1" deep dent in the tailgate. So I would have to say the metal will bend before the cables will break....

Do you remember where it broke? (Did the cables part, the thimbles at the end of the cables break, or did the truck bitt break off itself?)
