Tailgate cable load capacity?

It bowed and partially popped apart at its seams.
It was bent way past the point of it ever closing again.
It did not actually break and fall off the truck, and sorry if I made it sound like it did.
I guess in my way of thinking, it was broken as it was now basically junk.
