I have always used Motorcraft oil and filters in my 05 F150 since I bought it brand new. The dealership where I bought it was 3 miles from my house and recently closed down. I used to take it thru their quick lane for oil changes. I want to start changing my own oil. What is a good brand of oil that comes highly recommended by mechanics that I can use that's available at a local parts retailer like Autozone or Checker? I am sure I can just grab any brand that is semi-synthetic with the same weight ratio but thought I would throw this out there to get some help.
I always stick with Motorcraft synthetic blend 5W-20. Our autozone sells it, but it's high at $4.09/quart. I usually end up stocking up at walmart on oil and the motorcraft filters when they have them.
I'd just stick with the Motorcraft 5W20 and Motorcraft filters; both of these are commonly available at auto parts stores and other retailers. I know Murray's in Michigan (related to Checker I believe) has Motorcraft oil and filters.
I can't say that there is any 5W20 syn blend that I'd perceive to be any better than Motorcraft; some of the full syns may be a bit better, especially if you want to run longer oil change intervals.
My '02 E150 always lived on Motorcraft oil from the dealer, and now that it's been out of the 60k warranty, I've been changing my own and running it on QS Torquepower synthetic, but that's because I got 24 quarts of 5W20 for 99 cents each at an Advance AP closeout... I'll probably go right back to Motorcraft 5W20 semi-syn when I've used up my stash of full syn.
Hi
Im sticking with the Motorcraft 5w-20 Synth oil.Thats what the Ford recommends.Yes,there are oils out there like royal purple that will last but Ive never been comfortable letting oil go at about 5K miles.Im from the old school here.Engine runs smooth on this oil....Pete

That's exactly what I was thinking. I just never see the motorcraft oil on the shelves at my local stores. I guess I will look around or just go buy it from the dealership if it is a better deal.
I run the amsoil with the amsoil filter. Ya its expensive but it says 35000 miles or one year. I usually change it after 25000 miles. Havent had a problem yet with any of our vehicles. Got a 01 f150 with the 5.4 and it has almost 170000 miles and we have been running amsoil in it for the last 5 years or so and no problems
Still Smoking....what does AMS have over Mobile One Extended Performance? I've been running Mobil since day one or first oil change....
My dad ran Mobile 1 in his 1995 F150 5.0 for 415k before someone felt the need to steal it in Laredo, tx....bastar**s!!!! Only work done to it was tranny other than regular maint.
I agree with Still smoking....What AMSOIL has over Mobil 1 is the oil base used. AMSOIL is the only synthetic oil that does not use a parafin wax base in their oil, which causes your build up and sludge over time. Its different from any other oil out there. Its very expensive, but at once a year or 25,000 miles it pays for itself. Its also important to use AMSOIL filters because the oil will actually pull dirt out of your motor, and the higher micron count of their filters will catch more. I am not a salesman for them, I just have seen what the stuff does and its fantastic. Our diesel truck fleet at my shop uses it, and we send samples in every other month to AMSOIL to be tested; We have had trucks run a year and a half on one oil change. Once you get over the old school of thinking its a great product. They are also the only oil company that will go to bat for you if a dealer says their oil voided your warranty. If they dont win in court, they will pay for all repairs. I run the tranny fluid as well which is good for 100,000 miles. Check out their website because they offer oils for every application including 2 stroke which will get rid of that "smoking" chain saw you got.
Walmart is selling 5 quart containers of Quaker State 5/20 full synthetic for $18. That comes out to $3.50 a quart. It is only $5.50 more then the 5 quart Ford oil. I think your better off with a full synthetic and doing it this way it's only . 50 more per quart. I go 5,000 miles between oil changes, so if you change your oil at 3,000 miles with the Ford oil, then the math says the synthetic is way cheaper.

What he said. I have been told by mechaincs also that is what they would recomend. I was real leary of running it at first for 25000 miles even though it said 35000 miles. But every since we ran it we have had no problems. All are cars run great with it. My mechanic that uses amsoil put it in his trans and transfer case and it has helped out with mpg. About 2-3. I havent got that far with amsoil. But for I think its 45 bucks or something like that its been 20000 miles since I changed it in my truck it pays for itself rather than doing it every 3000.
The Manual for my truck says to change every 5 thousand miles. I didn't feel comfortable doing that on a syn blend oil. At autozone they always have a sale on some type of full synthetic with a fram tough gaurd filter for like 15 bucks. So that is what I always go with.
